All lanes of Hwy. 401 westbound traffic, west of Wesleyville, were closed as a result of a serious motor vehicle collision on Thursday morning approximately one kilometre west of the Port Hope boundary into Durham Region.

The collision was reported shortly after 8 a.m. that a vehicle went into a ravine and there was possibly a person trapped. An air ambulance landed on scene. Westbound traffic exiting at Wesleyville was backed up several kilometres.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP Highway Safety Division, said three people were in the vehicle when it rolled down an embankment. One of the occupants was airlifted from the scene while another was transferred by land ambulance. One of the occupants was without vital signs at the scene.

Schmidt confirmed there was one fatality from the collision.
