Celebrating 25 Years of Choral Excellence

By Cherie Madill

25 years of excellence in professional non-profit choral training for Northumberland children and teens in Cobourg has not only produced an award winning choir, it has served as the training ground for the development of musical careers. A number of Canadian music professionals began their singing days with the La Jeunesse Choirs experience. Just three of many are Virginia Hatfield, Sue Passmore and Kerri Ough. Virginia is now one of Canada's finest sopranos, with a stellar career in opera. And Sue and Kerri are two members of the Juno-winning folk trio "The Good Lovelies".

In celebration of this special anniversary, La Jeunesse Choirs is hosting an event on April 27 at Trinity United Church that will reconnect 25 years of alumni with each other in an afternoon workshop to prepare numbers with Musical Director, Markus Howard. This fellowship of song will be preparation for a performance at that evening's "Vino and Vocals", a fundraising wine, tapas, and chocolate pairing event for the public, to help fund and foster the musical education of the current crop of children and young people in Northumberland.

The LJ organization, in partnership with its generous sponsors (Harden & Huyse Chocolates, daizies Cafe, Huff Estates Winery, as well as Encore Tents), will entertain event guests and supporters with music from local musicians The Arcadian Duo; Elizabeth Barlow; and cap off the event with the LJ Alumni performers, reunited for this one evening. There will also be a silent auction with items donated by local businesses and choir parents, and an archive display of items from over the years, with various memorabilia prizes.

It will be a don't miss event for the community, with a feel good result: helping to continue the choral music education of Northumberland children. And perhaps more future famous Canadian singers!

Tickets for the Saturday, April 27 event (from 7 to 9:30PM) are $35 each, and are available in Cobourg from Harden & Huyse Chocolates, at 201 Division Street, and daizies Cafe, at 74 King Street West, or by reserving tickets by email at ljchoirs@eagle.ca.
