Stereos love the sound of success

Edmontonnative band Stereos have come a long way since booking their own local shows and hoping people would show up.

Stereos, which received national attention on the MuchMusic show disBAND, are lead vocalist Pat Kordyback, lead guitarist Miles Holmwood, bass guitarist Daniel Johnson, rhythm guitarist Robb Chalifoux and drummer Aaron Verdonk.

They are currently on a cross-Canada tour, which includes a sold-out show at the Park Playhouse in Cobourg tonight.

"To see the country and meet the fans is a dream come true," Kordyback said over the phone from Cornwall earlier this week. "(Being on disBAND) was probably the happiest time of our lives. We figured, even if we got a thumbs down, at least Canada will know about us."

On MuchMusic, disBAND offers musicians the chance to catch the eye of the music industry. At the end of their episode, they receive either a thumbs-up or thumbs down.

Stereos received a thumbs-up and ultimately a record deal as well from Universal Music Canada. They had a huge debut hit with Summer Girl.

This, however, is no overnight success story. The band performed under different names for a couple of years before even being on the TV show. The members have also spent time in other bands.

"It was a struggle like every other band has," Kordyback said. "You feel like you have what it takes, but it's really hard to stick out."

Kordyback said the band stays true to its pop and R&B music influences, even if they encounter critics at times.

"For the people that do latch onto our music, they can see that it's genuine because if it's fake you can see right through that," he said.

"I am doing music as my job and that's all I've ever wanted. It's not for fame or fortune because if that's all you want it's hollow."

Aside from touring, Stereos members remain busy writing. Kordyback said the band's debut album is unique in that fans who bought the deluxe version receive a new song online every month for a year.

Next spring, they'll also be one of the opening acts on Hedley's tour.

Right now, the focus for the Stereos is on their tour, which includes a stop at the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup championship game where they'll help warm up the crowd prior to kickoff.

Tonight's concert also features The Midway State, The Artist Life and The Envy.
