Joan Ross joins college's board of governors

Retired Northumberland Hills Hospital CEO Joan Ross was inducted this week as the newest member of Fleming College's board of governors.

Meeting at Cobourg -- which is one of the college's four campuses, along with Peterborough, Lindsay and Haliburton -- the governors toured the Elgin St. facility prior to meeting and welcoming Ross for a two-year term.

Since 1992, said vice-chair Sandra Hill, it has been the custom to welcome all present and past governors into the college's Governors' Club with a tie or scarf of the Murray-clan tartan. Sir Sandford Fleming, after whom the college was named, was Scottish, Hill said. However, since the Fleming clan is a subclan of the Murray clan, the ties and scarves bear the Murray pattern.

As part of the agenda, the governors heard a report from Cobourg campus leader Deborah Clifford. The highlights:

* Their esthetician program, which has expanded its focus to health and wellness, has a close association with Ste. Anne's spa -- a valuable partnership for the students.

* Another partnership is with the Northumberland Child Development Centre in support of their Learning, Earning and Parenting program. The college will host a visit to the esthetician program by about 30 mothers and provide babysitting.

* Some $98,000 in new funding has been received in support of its academic upgrading program, coinciding with an increase in students seeking more education and training in order to re-enter the workforce. More than 100 students are enrolled on both full-and part-time bases.

* An application has been made to permit the college to serve Northumberland's large and vital artisan community by creating a program to teach them business skills. This is being done in partnership with the Northumberland Business Advisory Committee, Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation and several arts associations.
