A Cobourg trainer has been named the FAME Trainer of the Year.

The acronym stands for Fitness Athletes Models and Entertainment. This group is behind the FAME World Tour international physique competitions that are held -- one of which was held in Cobourg in March.

The team Avery created, called Team Avery, has competed throughout the year, garnering 15 first-place victories, 13 second-place scores and eight third-place, with another half-dozen placings in the top five.

Many of his team members are recruited from YMCA Northumberland, where Avery works as a personal trainer.

According to the FAME press release, "It is the personal trainers who become a great source of inspiration, information and guidance, ensuring their clients stay focused on their goals. Aside from physique training, trainers often also become a friend, mentor, source of encouragement, personal cheerleader and an ally.

"Good personal trainers are in your corner from the very first meeting and hold your hand when you need it most. They are there to help you push past any challenges and bring out the best in you."

Interviewed prior to the March show, Avery was keen on the team approach, in terms of members supporting and challenging each other to be their best.

"It's about confidence, not arrogance, just getting up there and having fun," he stated.

"They're going to be looking back on this for years to come as something that was really cool and fun."

Avery said this had been a year in which he accomplished more than he had dreamed possible.

"My priority has always been the success of my clients. They become more than competitive athletes and clients, they become extended members of my family.

"It was truly an honour this year to take the stage side by side with them, in true team camaraderie. I am privileged to live a life, constantly witnessing people transforming their lives. Their success is my success."
