The Red Hat Society is a social organization for women over age 50 to go out and have fun. These women are often seen wearing red hats and purple clothing as they seize the day.
Groups like The Royal Lady Bugs Chapter from Northumberland and Buckhorn are official members of the Red Hat Society, which was started by Sue Ellen Cooper from California in 1998. These ladies are known for their "disorganization" with the aim of social interaction. They encourage fun, silliness, creativity and friendship in middle age and beyond.

Some outfits were flamboyant with feather boas, but no two hats or outfits were alike.
All the ladies with red hats are inspired by Jenny Joseph's poem Warning...
"When I am an Old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit..."
