Poppy scarves from Cobourg shop will benefit Legion
Twice as Nice consignment store owners Gill Kassla (L) and Candis Savage model the poppy fundraiser scarfs that have been selling like hotcakes from their downtown Cobourg business. The Legion in Cobourg is the recipient of $5 from the sale of every scarf and a new order is expected in the next few days, Kassia said on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 while she and Savage showed the two types available.VALERIE MACDONALD/NORTHUMBERLAND TODAY/POSTMEDIA NETWORK
COBOURG -- Every year the partners in Twice As Nice try to do something to support the Legion in Cobourg, especially around Remembrance Day.
This year's fundraising idea, purchasing poppy scarfs and contributing $5 to the Legion's poppy fund from the sale of each, has created quite a stir, says co-owner Gill Kassela.
She and business partner, Candis Savage, put some of the shawl-sized scarfs in the display window of their consignment shop at 38 King St. W., Cobourg and they sold out of 160 of them, Kassela said in an interview.
She couldn't believe so many people wanted them.
Another order of 50 or so is expected to arrive this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday, and after pre-paid orders are filled, the shop will use Facebook to let people know if there are anymore.
Some of the scarfs have white backgrounds and others have black backgrounds.
"I never expected it to turn into this," Kassela said.
She initially expected to sell only "20 to 30" but already its about six times that amount.
The 26-year-old store has its usual Remembrance Day display in the window, she added.
If you want to pre-pay and order a scarf you can call Twice As Nice at 905 372-3027.
Sales will continue through until Christmas as part of the poppy fundraiser.
