Successful season for St. Mary's

NORTHUMBERLAND -- St. Mary Secondary School athletic director and PE head Greg Conway has submitted sports news from the Cobourg secondary school, with good news to share.
Coach Tim Linehan of the boys' golf team -- which consists of Mark Clarey, Karsen Gunter, John O'Rourke and Alexi Filion -- reports that they were the Kawartha champions. They finished silver at COSSA and fourth at OFSAA.
Coach Ian Kendrick says the junior boys' soccer team are also Kawartha champions, beating CCI 10-1 in the final. The senior team beat St. Pete's in the semis in a shootout, and lost the final 2-1 to Adam Scott. Both teams play at COSSA Friday in Belleville.
Coach Mark Buzminski says the cross-country boys' team swept the Kawartha championships, with midget champion Mason Laity, junior Koby Read and senior Keagan Read. The junior boys' team were also Kawartha champions.
At COSSA, Mason Laity won gold medal in Midget Boys, Koby Read won silver in Junior Boys -- and the junior boys' tam also won silver. Keagan Read (senior boys) and Shaylee Craig (midget girls) also qualified for OFSAA.
In boys' Rugby Sevens, Coach Conway said, the team won the bronze medal at the ORU Provincial Sevens Championships last week at Fletcher's Field. Seeded seventh, they beat last year's champion and number-two seed this year Oakville Trafalgar (24-5), number-five seed Streetsville (38-7), number-10 seed Laurier (33-7) and lost a close 22-17 game to number-three seed Denison. Then they beat the number-one seed Dunbarton 24-19 in the bronze medal game.
They also won the Umbrella Sevens and Oshawa Sevens tournaments this fall, going 9-1 in those.
Coach Emily Tilemans's junior girls basketball team has playoffs at St. Mary's on Nov. 7.
Coach Mike Killoran reports junior girls rugby team ended their season with a loss to TAS at the Kawartha Playoffs.
