COBOURG -- Local audiences have enjoyed the affordable and unique events at Cobourg's art deco cinema The Loft.
On Oct. 15, the venue will host a new and imaginative art form as owner Ken Prue collaborates with internationally acclaimed composer Michael Pepa to combine live music in a film for their Counterpoint series.
The press release states that the genius of this new art form is to feature live music performed by virtuoso musicians, coupled with outstanding films where each component stands on its own -- and each complements the other.
The concept as pursued in this Les AMIS Counterpoint concert pairs live classical music in a Japanese motif with the classic Japanese film Rikyu (about the perfection of the Japanese tea ceremony 400 years ago).
The press release praised Prue's selection of movies that highlight beautiful camera work, scintillating scripts and interesting content, as opposed to sensationalism and violence.
"Rikyu is a story that has taken on epic proportions in Japanese cultural history," the announcement said.
"The film illustrates the classic struggle between art and politics, and between the impulse to create and the impulse to destroy.
"Compelling and poignant, Rikyu plays like a Japanese version of Beckett or A Man For All Seasons," it said.
Three performance pieces are planned -- Eight Haiku Poems for Soprano, Violin and Piano by Pepa; Meditazioni for Piano also by Pepa; and Rain Tree Sketch II -- In Memoriam Oliver Messiaen by Toru Takemitsu and The Moon Aria by Alice Ping Yee Ho.
The level of the performance will be second to none, with three virtuoso musicians.
Lyric coloratura Vania Chan has performed at Carnegie Hall and won at international competition. Italian pianist Dr. Erika Crinò is a University of Toronto faculty member, as well as a chamber musician who has performed throughout North America and Europe. Violinist Joyce Lai is a soloist and chamber musician who has been feature at various festivals throughout Canada, Europe and Asia. She is also featured as a guest artist internationally with various orchestras (including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra).
All are back by popular demand, having performed to a delighted Cobourg audience last fall.
And all are part of the Les AMIS Concerts series founded by Pepa, who is now a Cobourg resident. In its 34 years, the series has introduced new performers, new repertoire and innovative music-making in more than 190 concerts to Toronto audiences under artistic director Pepa.
The cozy, elegant setting of The Loft will offer a comfortable venue for this innovative program on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. It is located upstairs at 201 Division St. above the Craft restaurants.
