COBOURG -- Following their recent a cappella mini-series, the Northumberland Chorus has been focusing on its eighth annual Christmas Chorus program.
Past participants and newcomers alike are welcome -- any woman of any age who would like to try her voice at singing in the six-week program, which is followed up by a Nov. 18 Christmas tea and show called Journey to Bethlehem.
This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in learning to sing a cappella four-part harmony, barbershop-style. Novice singers will find it a simple proces with the aid of an instructional book, music and learning tracks.
When first learning the songs, the ladies separate into sections (bass, baritone, lead, tenor) and are helped along by their respective section leaders. They then reunite on the risers to put it all together into melodic harmonies.
Sessions begin Oct. 16 and run Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Columbus Community Centre in Cobourg. The evening always starts with fun physical and vocal warm-ups. And new participants are welcome to stay afterwards and listen, as the regular Northumberland Chorus works on its own repertoire from 8 to 9 p.m.
The chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, has been singing for audiences in the community and beyond for more than 35 years. These ladies have enjoyed participating in non-profit events and organizing educational events. always hopeful that new women will get the chance to experience and fall in love with the harmonies of a cappella singing.
Christmas is a magical season, and this invitation offers the chance to enjoy it to its fullest through the gift of music and fellowship.
