COBOURG -

Sitting in committee of the whole this week, Cobourg council approved the recommendation of the accessibility-advisory committee to waive dog-tag fees for service animals.

"Very good," Mayor Gil Brocanier declared after the vote.

"I think it's the right thing to do."

The committee made the recommendation last month in response to a letter from Laurie Scott who requested that the dog-tag fees be waived.

The exemption will set no precedent, the report before council said, since many other municipalities already offer the same exemption. However the financial implications are the loss of $15 to $20 per tag for qualifying animals.

A bylaw will be prepared to amend bylaw 075-2010 for the licensing and registration of dogs to exempt registered service animals from licensing fees.
