COBOURG -

A VIA Rail passenger train pulls into the Cobourg station, past the construction, on Saturday afternoon during a busy weekend of holiday travel. This time next year, train travellers leaving Cobourg will be departing from a brand new station. VIA Rail spokesman Jacques Gagnon says the construction of the new Cobourg facility is moving ahead as planned and should be open by spring. "We are targeting the end of the first quarter for completion of the renovations," Gagnon said. "We want to be as efficient as possible and finish in a timely manner." Much of the work is being done at night, Gagnon said, for a variety of reasons including safety and fewer distractions (allowing the workers to be more productive). "The end result will see some vast improvements (over the current station)," Gagnon said.
